You claim skill in every art
and knowledge of every science,
Yet you cannot even hear
what your own heart is telling you.

Until you can hear that simple voice
How can you be a keeper of secrets?
How can you be a traveller on this path?

-- Version by Jonathan Star and Shahram Shiva

"Cynthia Schneider looks at two international "American Idol"-style shows -- one in Afghanistan, and one in the United Arab Emirates -- and shows the surprising effect that these reality TV competitions are creating in their societies."

"I want to work in revelations, not just spin silly tales for money. I want to fish as deep down as possible into my own subconscious in the belief that once that far down, everyone will understand because they are the same that far down. "

I can't believe some people spend over 2/3 of their income on housing :/

“life will break you.
nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearnings.
you have to love.
you have to feel.
it is the reason you are here on earth.
you are here to risk your heart.
you are here to be swallowed up.
and when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt,
or death brushes near, let yourself sit by an apple tree
and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness.
tell yourself that you tasted as many as you could.”

When I say 'maybe' on a Facebook event, it is:

a) A polite 'Not attending/decline'
b) Something you want to keep in mind in case nothing better comes up
c) a default response to most events
d) are actually unsure whether you are able to attend/something you will update later

  • Sep. 21st, 2009 at 5:09 PM

Subject: Ontario's Bill 118, An Amendment to the Highway Traffic Act - Cell Phone Ban

Ontario's Bill 118, an amendment to the Highway Traffic Act is now in effect and bans drivers from using handheld devices with display screens while operating a vehicle on the road. Here is a summary of the new rules:
·
Holding or using a wireless communication device (a cell phone) or a portable electronic entertainment device (iPod) while driving is prohibited.
·
Commercial GPS units along with similar dashboard-mounted devices that provide gauges and displays relating to logistical or navigation uses are permitted.
·
Using a cell phone or wireless communication device in hands-free mode, as long as you're not holding it during use, is permitted.
·
Using any device while pulled-over or parked in a way that you are not disrupting traffic, is permitted.
·
The systems used by Ambulances, Fire Departments, and Law Enforcement are exempt.

The ban is in effect as of September 1, 2009 and will carry a fine of $500.
Demerit points will not be included but depending upon the violation, police will have the option to also use existing careless driving laws for additional penalties.

This bill has been passed for the safety and protection of all drivers on the road.

Emotional Sources of Back Pain

  • Sep. 13th, 2009 at 11:46 PM

  • Lower back pain generally signifies fear of money and lack of financial support.
  • Middle back pain is often symptomatic of guilt, feeling “stuck in all that stuff back there” or a person feels pressured and wishes they could tell someone to “get off of my back.”
  • Upper back pain often indicates lack of emotional support, feeling unloved, and/or holding back love.

Affirmations for healing back pain:

  • Life supports me. I trust the universe. I freely give love and trust.
  • Lower back: I trust the process of life. All I need is always taken care of. I am safe.
  • Mid back: I release the past. I am free to move forward with love in my heart.
  • Upper back: I love and approve of myself. Life supports and loves me."

I've been in my apartment for over a month and have only ever sat in my living room once.
After spending so long in a Bachelor, old habits die hard.
Still eating/reading/watching movies on my bed.

This apartment has my arms and legs

So I got my first gas bill today (for the gas stove). It's about $18/month (which is A-OK), however my invoice was for $304.

Set up fees and a $250 security deposit (that I will only get back in two years if I don't have any late payments, otherwise I only get it when I cancel services). I think its smart that the corporation is collecting a security deposit, to avoid default risk, but $250 is SUPER EXCESSIVE. That means I have to default for over a year for it to make any sense! plus they cancel services if you don't pay up for 2 months, so really what is the logic here.

I wasn't planning for this huge expense :/

Went to old apartment to get keys from my subletters. Good thing they called because I completely forgot about them today. They left the place in decent shape. I thought I would have some nostalgia  or saddress (remorse?) but nope I walked in and laughed out loud at how small it was. How did I ever live there!? how did I fit 20 people in there at parties??!!

It seemed so sad and small and depressing. Gave the keys to the old landlord and walked out happy and looking forward to going home to my new place. Now with full size Foozeball table. I like my new place. I even like that my downstairs neighbour is a weird musician who kept me up until 1am banging on the piano, because it was a kind of rolling wavy rythm, soothing. I like his guitar and his xylophone too. I  I also like his home phone and his answering machine (how quaint!). I mean the phone actually goes 'brrring brrring', just like in the olden days!

Organic Meat = $

"Chickens are not given any hormones or steroids. Hormones and steroid use in Canada has been illegal since the 1960s. Moreover, chicken is tested by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to ensure that there are absolutely no medication residues that could cause any risk to human health." (Chicken Farmers of Canada). However, there are no current guidelines or laws in place on the use of antibiotics. Antibiotics are widely used for prevention over treatment.

Hormonal growth promoters are naturally occurring or synthetic products. They are approved for use in beef cattle.

"Antibiotics Injected Into Chicken Eggs. Cephalosporin is not approved for use in chickens or eggs, but it is often "robotically injected" into eggs at chicken hatcheries as a preventative measure to stave off infections, reports the CMAJ. This occurs on an off- or extra-label basis, which means that the drug is being used for unapproved reasons. Health Canada has issued a safety warning label about off-label use of cephalosporin, but critics say that is not enough and want tighter restrictions or a ban on the sale of these antibiotics for food animal production."

Terrifying Raccoons

  • Aug. 27th, 2009 at 11:03 AM

My neighbor put out a raccoon trap last night and caught one on his balcony at 3am. It cried and screamed for about an hour while people in the other units started waking up, banging and complaining. A crying raccoon actually sounds quite sad and pathetic. They are all over the buildings, they dig up the plants on my balcony, get in to the garbage buns, hang out on the roof (I imagine they are waiting to jump down and eat your face). To date, they have only stared with their beady eyes and razor teeth. I don't know what happened to the animal, but all was quiet by 4am. Creepy.
